Before the city of Pleasanton was founded, the area was known as a settlement called Alisal. Throughout the latter half of the 19th century, Alisal served as a refuge for bandits during the California Gold Rush, earning the area a reputation for criminal activity.

Eventually, Alisal became a more peaceful settlement; the area was bought by John W. Kottinger, who named the town Pleasonton, after a good friend. However, a typographical error made by the Postal Service changed the official spelling of the city's name to "Pleasanton." Today, Pleasanton is one of the wealthiest small cities in the United States; it is ranked among the most highly-desirable hometowns by USA Today, Money, and Forbes. The area is also home to numerous national headquarters, including Safeway Inc. and Ross Stores.
